CLEVER Recreation Therapy A Diversion Program for Youth Offenders
The CLEVER Recreation Therapy component of the program was implemented in November of 2007. This is a 7 week, family based program that is geared toward violence prevention. Eligible participants are youth that have been charged with an offense where violence was involved. Referrals are made from the District Attorney’s Office. The youth offender and a family member take part in 6 weeks of group education/counseling that is facilitated by a licensed counselor. Topics covered during the group sessions include bullying, anger management, conflict resolution, anti-gun, substance abuse prevention, and truancy prevention. The 7th week is a community service learning activity where the students participate in a service project at various non-profit agencies in the community. Opportunities for skill building are incorporated into every service learning activity. Upon successful completion of this 7 week program, the juvenile is able to have a clean record with no charges for this specific offense.
